Our in-store kitchen pumps out a wide variety of exclusive made in house products. From baked mueslis and granolas, to hummus, hemp bars and mustard. We are constantly experimenting with our expansive pantry and adding new items. Made the way food should be, we don't add preservatives or fillers.
The Hideaway
The Hideaway + Coffee Shop is a community focused gathering place with live music, pop up food carts and events. It is a place where the James Bay community comes for coffee, a snack and a laugh. Whether you are a local or from out of town, the Hideaway is a welcoming place to get a beverage and enjoy the sights and sounds of James Bay.

For Good Measure Cadboro Bay is Victoria's original bulk food store. Started in 1983, what was originally the Cadboro Bay Bulk Food Store, became For Good Measure Premium Bulk Food in 1994.
We specialize in bulk, natural and specialty foods and our customers buy everything here from fresh produce grown on our family farm and eggs grown on the Saanich Peninsula to dried fruit, BC grown grains and flour, spices, raw nuts and even fresh roasted nuts from our very own nut roastery. Re-fillable containers and bags are welcome!
Having grown up in the store, Max Young took over the store in 2013, when his father Mark retired to his farm in Cobble Hill. Mark can still be found at the store some mornings with his wife Karen, as they deliver their farm fresh produce sold exclusively at For Good Measure.
In 2002, we built a small kitchen in the back of the store and fired up a cottage nut roasting operation. Our kitchen is busy 40+ hours a week making roasted nuts, nut butters, trail mixes, glazed nuts, cookies baked cereals/granolas, and our Hungry Hemp Bars.

579 Niagara St is one of Victoria’s oldest grocery stores, if not the oldest. The store was built in 1908 and in 1910 Frank W. Holliday started welcoming customers to his grocery store in the James Bay neighborhood. In 1948 the store was named Parkway Food Store and it was subsequently renamed Niagara Grocery in 1961. It remained Niagara Grocery until 2017 when it changed to Niagara Market. Since April 2020, we have been operating the store as For Good Measure.
While the store has changed hands many times and names a few times, it has remained a staple of the community for over 100 years. From live music performed by musicians that live in James Bay to staff that live in the neighborhood and walk to work we strive to maintain the store as a community hub. We focus on local produce and products and above all else quality. Our patio that we call ’The Hideaway’ is a sunny outdoor that frequently has live music, pop up food carts and other events.
Coffee Shop/Cafe
We are proud to brew Mile Zero Coffee. Mile Zero Coffee was started right here at 579 Niagara St. and while they no longer roast their coffee at our store, we are proud to support a company that had its roots in James Bay. Order an American or Latte or ask one of our baristas to make your custom drink.
BULK & GROCERY
Not only does our James Bay location list over a hundred bulk items, roast its own nuts in-house but also specializes in local grocery products including Dumpling Drop, Four Quarters Meats, Galloping Goose Sausage Company, Island Nut Roastery nut butters, Wildfire bread, Island Farms milk, Tree Island Yogurt and many others.
